About the position

The Robotics Systems Technician/Engineer position at Georgetown University involves conducting experiments and analyzing data related to 3D machine vision robotic systems. The role supports the development of standards for measuring depth error and resolution in robotic systems, particularly for bin-picking applications. This position is part of the NIST/GU PREP team, focusing on scientific research collaboration and training across various backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments and analyze data to understand 3D machine vision robotic systems.
  • Support the development of standards for measuring depth error and depth resolution.
  • Program and maintain robots including arms, mobile robots, and exoskeletons.
  • Operate and maintain measurement equipment such as laser trackers and oscilloscopes.
  • Assist in recording and analyzing test data and preparing test reports.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, adjustment, and repairs of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in market research for laboratory purchases.
  • Use CAD software to design parts, end-of-arm tooling, and fixtures.
  • Record knowledge and best practices to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Conduct tests in the laboratory and field, preparing test reports.

Requirements

  • Associates or bachelor's degree in physical sciences, engineering, or related field; or a training certificate in robotics, engineering, or automation.
  • Experience using gauge blocks and/or micrometers with a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience with digital oscilloscopes, multimeters, and environmental monitoring instruments.
  • Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks.
  • Experience in programming robots using a teach pendant, hand guidance, and command line interface.
  • Experience using basic hand and power tools safely in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience with fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers.
  • Ability to work without close supervision in a team environment.
  • Experience using software tools such as Matlab, Python, and Excel to analyze data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with dimensional measurement instruments like laser trackers and coordinate measurement machines.
  • Experience in programming/controlling robots using Python, C++, C#, JAVA, etc.
  • Experience with the robot operating system (ROS).
  • Experience with simulation software like MoveIT and RoboDK.
  • Experience with basic machine tools such as drill press and lathe.
  • Experience with programming and using CNC milling machines.
