About the position

This role is with Rockwell Automation, a leader in automation control systems. As a Hardware Engineer Co-op, you will join a dynamic team focused on developing the next generation of automation control systems. Your primary responsibility will be to validate the functionality and performance of new hardware, ensuring that all products meet functional, regulatory, and safety requirements. This position emphasizes collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the application of engineering development practices to overcome challenges. You will be part of an agile team tasked with developing test requirements and executing hardware verification test plans that trace back to product requirements. This includes conducting board-level functional testing, EMC/EMI assessments, and ensuring compliance with safety agencies such as UL, ATEX, and IECEX, as well as functional safety standards like IEC 61508. Additionally, you will engage in environmental testing and contribute to the creation of product design documentation and test reports. The role requires a proactive approach, where you will take ownership of your assignments, understand expected outputs, and seek assistance when necessary. Building strong relationships with technical leads and peers will be crucial for your growth and understanding of the product development lifecycle. You will receive continuous mentorship and coaching to support your professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Work on an agile team to develop test requirements and execute hardware verification test plans with traceability to product requirements.
  • Conduct board level functional testing, EMC/EMI assessments, and ensure compliance with safety agencies (UL, ATEX, IECEX).
  • Engage in functional safety testing (IEC 61508) and environmental testing.
  • Perform programming, analysis, and troubleshooting of electronic hardware prototypes.
  • Contribute to associated product design documentation and test reports.
  • Take ownership of assignments by understanding expected output and requesting help as needed.
  • Build relationships with technical leads and peers to grow knowledge of the product development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree at an accredited college or university.
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar technical degree.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Previous co-op/intern experience in Hardware Development and/or Embedded Systems.
  • Experience using design capture tools and understanding schematics.
  • Basic knowledge of circuit theory and operation, including microprocessors and digital logic devices.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware test equipment, including debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Experience developing and/or using programs (assembly, C/C++, Python, ladder) for product initialization, debug, or test.
  • Experience working as part of a team using Agile/Scrum methodologies in a Scaled Agile Framework.
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems and programmable logic controllers.
  • Experience performing product certification testing, such as testing to meet CE and IEC 61010.
