About the position

The Rodent Veterinary Technician position in the Research Animal Resources (RAR) department at Johns Hopkins is crucial for supporting the animal research enterprise. This role involves providing veterinary care and research services for rodents and other small animals, including those used in high-containment studies such as COVID-19 research. The technician will manage rodent breeding colonies, assist investigators, and ensure compliance with safety protocols and standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Manage rodent breeding colonies and provide technical support for investigators and veterinarians.
  • Identify animals through ear tagging and ear notching.
  • Set up breeding cages and wean animals.
  • Collect and submit samples for genotyping.
  • Record pedigree, births, deaths, and weaning data electronically.
  • Perform cross-foster rederivation and routine rodent bio methodology.
  • Conduct blood collection, injections, oral gavage, euthanasia, and tissue harvest.
  • Perform survival surgical procedures on rodents.
  • Act as a liaison between researchers and RAR.
  • Maintain detailed records for billing and provide weekly colony reports to investigators and veterinarians.
  • Order animals and supplies, maintain equipment, and manage inventory.
  • Coordinate with husbandry personnel for animal care and assist in training researchers.
  • Follow safety protocols and implement SOPs for infection control.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of related working experience in laboratory animal science or animal research, particularly with rodents.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and excellent recordkeeping skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in rodent breeding colony management.
  • Experience in rodent bio-methodology.
  • Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, or Biology preferred.
