About the position

The Facilities team at the ASPCA is dedicated to ensuring that all locations are fully operational, providing optimum conditions for staff and volunteers to achieve their program and departmental goals. This role is crucial in maintaining a healthy environment for both staff and the animals that visit our facilities, whether for short-term or long-term stays. Under the general direction of the Senior Facilities Manager, the Roving Maintenance Technician will be responsible for a variety of repairs and maintenance tasks, both indoors and outdoors, throughout the day. These tasks include landscaping, equipment maintenance, special event support, basic plumbing and electrical work, light vehicle maintenance, snow removal, carpentry, painting, and the inspection of fire alarm and generator systems across the Behavior Rehabilitation Center and ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance facilities. The technician must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include Monday to Friday, Tuesday to Saturday, or Sunday to Thursday, and be available for 24/7 on-call duties as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Facilities Manager in maintaining and improving the overall condition of ASPCA facilities and the functionality of building mechanical and operating systems.
  • Travel between assigned locations to handle maintenance assignments.
  • Notify managers about the need for additional supply inventory or major repairs.
  • Conduct routine facility testing and inspections, including fire extinguishers, fire panels, exit lights, emergency lights, fire alarm systems, generators, and medical gas systems.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance throughout buildings and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment failures and maintenance issues throughout the facilities.
  • Conduct plumbing repairs, including replacing or repairing toilets, faucets, and clearing clogged drains.
  • Perform electrical repairs, including using electrical testers and replacing light bulbs.
  • Carry out general repairs, including repairing locks, hinges, doors, and performing painting and carpentry tasks.
  • Maintain grounds using tools such as hedge trimmers and snow removal equipment.
  • Report discrepancies or deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Use hand and power tools for general repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with office moves and maintain cleaning solutions in accordance with OSHA requirements.
  • Supervise the fire panel and conduct lamp tests on the fire panel, troubleshooting fire system trouble signals.
  • Transport supplies across ASPCA facilities and maintain tool storage areas.
  • Complete all other tasks assigned by the Facilities Managers and Directors.

Requirements

  • Fluent in reading and writing English.
  • Skilled in plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical work, and general repairs.
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Moderate computer skills are required.
  • Physical capacity to handle heavy lifting (at least 50 lbs.), standing for long periods, and climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to follow directions in a productive and timely manner.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, listening).
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to drive when necessary.
  • Previous experience in facilities maintenance or general repair is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and floor plans.
  • Previous experience in testing and inspection of Fire Alarm Systems and related components.
  • Previous experience in supervision of Piped Non-Flammable Medical Gases.
  • Previous experience handling and dispensing flammable or combustible liquids.
