About the position

The Royalty Compliance Auditor II position at the New Mexico State Land Office (NMSLO) plays a crucial role in the Royalty Management Division, which is dedicated to generating revenue through leasing activities on state trust lands. This position is essential for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of billions of dollars in annual oil and gas royalty revenue. The primary responsibility of the auditor is to ensure the consistent and efficient distribution of this revenue to public schools, universities, and hospitals across New Mexico. The role also emphasizes the importance of providing quality customer service to all stakeholders involved in the trust management process. In this position, the auditor will be tasked with processing royalty returns submitted by large oil and gas royalty remitters, which often involve high levels of complexity. This includes reconciling the royalty returns that have been processed and validating the notices generated by the Oil and Natural Gas Administration and Revenue Database (ONGARD) system. The auditor will interact significantly with oil and gas return filers, providing assistance to correct any errors found in the returns filed. This role is accountable not only to the public schools, universities, and hospitals in New Mexico but also to the oil and gas industry, ensuring compliance and accuracy in royalty reporting. The position requires collaboration with various internal divisions, including the Oil, Gas, and Minerals Division, Administrative Services, Commercial Division, Legal Division, and Surface Resources Division, as well as executive management officials within the State Land Office. Externally, the auditor will engage with a wide range of customers, including New Mexico public schools, universities, hospitals, individuals, lessees from various sectors, and government entities at all levels.
