About the position

The Makielski lab at the University of Minnesota is seeking a research technician and lab manager to contribute to cutting-edge cancer research, particularly focusing on osteosarcoma and exosome biology. This full-time position involves a mix of research activities (75-80%) and laboratory management duties (20-25%), providing an opportunity to design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and assist in managing laboratory operations in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure that it is in good working condition.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering supplies and maintaining stock.
  • Maintain laboratory safety records and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures.
  • Train new personnel on laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation.
  • Design and conduct complex laboratory experiments related to human and canine osteosarcoma.
  • Perform cell culture and maintain cell lines used in experiments.
  • Assist with animal handling, including administration of drugs and other treatments.
  • Transportation of samples between the veterinary school and the lab for processing.
  • Process blood and tissue samples.
  • Enrich exosomes from samples and perform exosome characterization.
  • Perform DNA and RNA extraction from blood and tissue samples.
  • Prepare and submit samples for next-generation sequencing.
  • Perform protein extraction from exosome preparations.
  • Attend laboratory meetings and present research findings.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data from laboratory experiments.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of all laboratory activities.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and laboratory staff to achieve research goals.
  • Help with the preparation of scientific papers, presentations and posters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 4 years.
  • Laboratory experience is required.
  • Experience with laboratory techniques, including cell culture and PCR, is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to design and conduct laboratory experiments.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to accurately record and analyze data.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
