About the position

The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist position within the Department of Defense is a critical role that encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the safety and health of personnel and compliance with federal regulations. The incumbent will serve as the Mercury Program Manager, Security Officer, Respiratory Protection Officer, Ergonomics Chairperson, and Safety and Occupational Health Manager. This position reports directly to the Chief of Environmental Management at DLA Strategic Materials, providing support to Headquarters and all stockpile and storage field facilities throughout the United States. In this role, the specialist will interpret new safety and occupational health legislation by consulting and collaborating with DLA and DoD experts to resolve environmental hazards. The specialist will provide recommendations for implementation and serve as the technical expert in program elements covering hazard classification, safety, health, fire protection, and health compliance. The position requires the preparation, maintenance, and analysis of reports on accidents and current operations to identify problem areas that need to be addressed and corrected. Ensuring that the organization adheres to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations is a key responsibility of this role. The work environment is dynamic and may involve exposure to hazardous materials and conditions, necessitating the use of protective equipment. The specialist will also be responsible for developing and disseminating safety promotion information and materials to enforce and inform safety rules, policies, standards, and regulations. This position is essential for maintaining a safe working environment and promoting a culture of safety within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Mercury Program Manager, Security Officer, Respiratory Protection Officer, Ergonomics Chairperson, and Safety and Occupational Health Manager.
  • Report to the Chief of Environmental Management, DLA Strategic Materials.
  • Interpret new safety and occupational health legislation and consult with DLA and DoD experts to resolve environmental hazards.
  • Provide recommendations for implementation of safety and health programs.
  • Prepare, maintain, and analyze reports of accidents and current operations to identify problem areas.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding safety and health.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in safety and occupational health program management.
  • Proficient experience in mercury management concepts, principles, and methods.
  • Mastery knowledge and skill in applying laws and regulations of mercury management.
  • Skilled in the application, investigation, problem-solving, and enforcement of safety and occupational health techniques.
  • Experience in developing and disseminating safety promotion information and materials.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in federal service or military safety programs.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to conduct safety training and workshops.
