About the position

The Safety and Sustainability Advisor at Colas Rail UK plays a crucial role in promoting safety and sustainability within the organization. This position is primarily project-based and involves providing professional advice on occupational health and safety (OHS) while fostering a positive safety culture across the Alliance. The advisor will oversee compliance with health and safety legislation, support accident prevention initiatives, and engage with employees and partners to enhance safety and sustainability practices.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee activities to ensure compliance with HS Legislation & Alliance Partner requirements.
  • Raise awareness of safety and sustainability throughout the MMA and support accident prevention initiatives.
  • Provide professional advice on the maintenance of the MMA safety management system for continual improvement.
  • Engage with employees, Alliance Partners & Contractors to promote a positive safety and sustainability culture.
  • Monitor safety and sustainability performance for assigned projects and ensure audit plans/targets are achieved.
  • Conduct safety and sustainability inspections and coordinate investigations into incidents and accidents.
  • Manage reporting of all safety and sustainability issues to the Head of Safety and Sustainability.
  • Assist in developing and implementing OSH strategies and initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver safety and sustainability training and briefings to MMA staff.
  • Responsible for data management and maintaining a monitoring system for safety and sustainability progress and KPI data.
  • Conduct personal, venue, and activity risk assessments as required.
  • Contribute to the development of systems and procedures to meet quality and performance targets.
  • Review safety documentation from Alliance Partners/Sub-contractors and provide feedback.

Requirements

  • Strong background in occupational safety management and supporting systems.
  • Trained Risk Assessor with knowledge of risk assessment techniques.
  • Competent in training development and delivery.
  • Proficient in Office applications: Excel, Word, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of behavioral/collaboration techniques.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Membership or working towards membership in an appropriate professional institute (CMIOSH).
  • Experience in health and safety management within the infrastructure or construction industry.
  • Highly developed organizational and communication skills.

  • Experience in developing safety management systems.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices in the construction industry.
