About the position

The Safety Engineer (Industrial Hygiene Focus) at Valero is responsible for developing and implementing health and safety programs that align with regulatory standards to minimize workplace injuries and illnesses. This role involves collaboration with site leadership and operational teams to assess and mitigate health risks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and promoting a culture of safety within the organization.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement regulatory-aligned health and safety programs and policies.
• Partner with key stakeholders to understand injury and illness risks and necessary mitigations.
• Communicate effectively with Operations to implement process changes for compliance.
• Maintain records related to exposure assessments and other industrial hygiene programs.
• Research workplace hazards and communicate risks to the organization.
• Manage and support the site exposure assessment plan and IH management system.
• Develop cost-effective strategies to comply with regulations and reduce operational burdens.
• Create and deliver training materials for safety issues as required by regulations.
• Negotiate with regulatory agencies regarding compliance interpretations.
• Participate in Trade Association meetings relevant to the field.
• Implement Best Practices to reduce safety costs at the site.
• Support opportunity projects in a cost-effective manner.
• Evaluate new chemicals and process changes for safety and compliance impacts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or higher level degree in Engineering or related Science.
• 2 years of safety experience.
• Experience representing a company to regulatory agencies.
• Basic skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel).

Nice-to-haves

• 2 years of Industrial Hygiene (IH) experience.
• Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification.
