About the position

The Safety Engineer for Research Safety/Chemical Safety at Caltech is responsible for implementing comprehensive environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) programs to ensure the safety and well-being of the Institute community. This role involves providing training, consultation, evaluations, and hazard assessments to mitigate risks in laboratory and workplace environments. The position requires a strong background in the sciences and includes responsibilities such as conducting laboratory inspections, incident investigations, and supporting the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Implement comprehensive EH&S programs and procedures for the Institute community.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor and evaluate hazardous conditions in laboratories and workplaces.
  • Develop and deliver training on research safety topics.
  • Conduct annual and periodic laboratory inspections for safety compliance.
  • Advise on laboratory design and renovation for safety considerations.
  • Assist in chemical risk assessments and ongoing laboratory support.
  • Provide hazardous material shipping services according to regulations.
  • Respond to incidents involving chemical or biological spills and exposures.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant science discipline (Chemistry, Engineering).
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in an EH&S program.
  • Working knowledge of training development software (e.g., PowerPoint, Articulate 360).
  • Ability to stand and walk for moderate periods and lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other protective equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD degree in a relevant science field.
  • Experience in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of synthetic chemistry techniques.
  • HAZWOPER 40h certification.
  • Familiarity with EH&S management systems.
