About the position

This position is part of the Research Safety Team at Caltech, reporting to the Director of Research Safety/Chemical Hygiene Officer. The role focuses on implementing comprehensive environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) programs to ensure the safety and well-being of the Institute community. The candidate will provide training, consultation, evaluations, and hazard assessments to mitigate risks in laboratory and workplace environments, while also supporting the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Responsibilities

• Follow all safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Implement programs, systems, and procedures to ensure overall safety and health of the campus and research community.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement risk mitigation strategies.
• Monitor and evaluate hazardous conditions in laboratories and recommend corrective actions.
• Perform investigative and technical work related to campus and research safety issues.
• Develop and deliver training on research safety topics using various platforms.
• Maintain accountability of assigned areas and track performance metrics.
• Conduct comprehensive laboratory inspections to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
• Advise on the design or renovation of laboratories.
• Assist in implementing and maintaining the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
• Provide hazardous material shipping services according to regulations.
• Respond to incidents such as chemical or biological spills.

Requirements

• Master's degree in a relevant science discipline (Chemistry, Engineering).
• At least 2 years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental, health and safety program.
• Working knowledge of training development software (PowerPoint, Articulate 360, etc.).

Nice-to-haves

• PhD degree in a relevant science field.
• Relevant experience in a university setting.
• Working knowledge of synthetic chemistry techniques.
• HAZWOPER 40h certification.
• Working knowledge of EH&S management systems.
