About the position

The Safety & Industrial Hygiene group plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and health of personnel within the organization. This is achieved through a comprehensive approach that includes hazard assessment and mitigation, the implementation of engineering control measures, and a commitment to continual improvement efforts. The group is also responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, which is essential for maintaining a safe working environment. In this position, the selected candidate will be tasked with performing assessments of potential workplace hazards associated with various research programs. The primary goal is to implement effective strategies that reduce personnel exposures and minimize the risk of accidents. The role involves conducting project reviews with a strong emphasis on Process Safety Management (PSM), hazard assessment, and the application of engineering controls to mitigate identified risks. The candidate will work collaboratively with a team to implement safety and health programs across the Institute, ensuring that all activities align with regulatory compliance requirements. Daily responsibilities will include conducting, facilitating, or participating in workplace and project risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks effectively. The candidate will also prepare and coordinate training sessions on risk analysis techniques as necessary. A significant aspect of the role involves overseeing the implementation of PSM requirements and collaborating with Program Managers to apply PSM best practices in projects that may not meet the established PSM thresholds. Utilizing a solid understanding of chemistry and physics, the candidate will assess various projects to ensure the mitigation of hazardous conditions, evaluate the chemicals involved in processes, and confirm that materials used are compatible while protecting personnel from any emissions or exposures. Additionally, the candidate will assist Incident Investigation teams in investigating and classifying safety incidents, providing support in the development of process tools and action plans to address identified Process Safety gaps. Emergency Response support will also be a part of the responsibilities, along with the development and delivery of safety training for Institute staff on process safety and OSHA requirements.
