About the position

The Safety & HR Generalist plays a crucial role in supporting various Human Resource and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) functions within the organization. This position is integral to the Environmental Health and Safety department, while also collaborating closely with the Human Resources team. The primary responsibilities include providing support to EHS team members and stakeholders in areas such as employee relations, safety concerns, workers' compensation, hazardous waste management, and compliance with drug and alcohol policies. Additionally, the role encompasses assisting Human Resources Business Partners in areas like talent management, talent acquisition, and total rewards. The Safety & HR Generalist is responsible for facilitating and communicating organizational policies and programs, ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations, and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. This position is part of a family of roles that includes EHS Specialist, EHS Lead Specialist, and Senior EHS Lead. Employees are assigned based on organizational needs, their level of experience, and competencies. The Safety & HR Generalist reports to the designated EHS Director based in Duluth, MN. The role requires a proactive approach to communication with employees regarding EHS and HR policies, ensuring that all practices comply with established guidelines. The individual in this position will also be involved in conducting investigations into employee concerns, maintaining confidentiality, and demonstrating professional behavior at all times. In addition to these responsibilities, the Safety & HR Generalist will lead and participate in company-sponsored activities aimed at enhancing employee engagement, assist with exit interviews to gain insights into turnover, and maintain accurate employee records in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The role also involves outlining and implementing training programs focused on workplace safety, participating in safety meetings, and acting as the first point of contact for general EHS/HR inquiries. Overall, this position is vital for fostering a safe and compliant workplace while supporting the organization's mission, vision, and core values.

Responsibilities

  • Support communication to employees regarding EHS and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Assist with communication regarding payroll, benefits, leave of absence, and recruitment to ensure compliance with HR policies.
  • Provide support and counsel to leaders and employees for consistent application of policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with leadership and employees to provide advice on employee issues and conduct investigations as necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment in sensitive matters, involving HR Business Partner when needed.
  • Lead and participate in company-sponsored activities to enhance employee engagement.
  • Conduct exit interviews to gain insights into turnover.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and administrative procedures in compliance with guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with Operations, Managers, Supervisors, and employees.
  • Participate in meetings to discuss workplace safety and regulatory concerns.
  • Outline and implement training programs on workplace safety.
  • Support accident prevention, regulations, and response efforts.
  • Actively support the company's mission, vision, and core values.
  • Participate in department meetings and suggest process improvements.
  • Respond to general EHS/HR inquiries and direct them appropriately, including injury triage and incident response.
  • Create and distribute memos and communication materials as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements for file maintenance, both physical and digital.
  • Assist with environmental compliance and Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms regulations.
  • Demonstrate regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Human Resource Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in Human Resources or Safety.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage stress and handle multiple projects effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Experience utilizing HRIS preferred.
