About the position

The Manager of Safety (Rail) is responsible for overseeing the division's Quality Assurance Program, conducting internal audits, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations in the field. This role involves monitoring certifications, training documentation, and participating in safety audits, while also providing detailed reports to the VP and Director of Safety. The position requires a hands-on approach to training and compliance, with a focus on continuous improvement and safety culture enhancement.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the division's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Perform internal audits at profit center levels.
  • Monitor the status of measuring and testing certifications.
  • Ensure personnel qualification certifications and training/testing documentation are up to date.
  • Write procedures as necessary for the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Train employees on the provisions of the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Participate in nonconformance root cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Conduct planned and unplanned audits to ensure rule compliance.
  • Accompany AAR, FRA, and customer auditors for certification audits.
  • Attend corporate/divisional safety calls to discuss efficiency testing and failures.
  • Audit check-rides and assist in qualifying new team members.

Requirements

  • Must be a DSLE and certified locomotive engineer (or able to become one in 12 months) by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • A minimum of 3 plus years of railroad experience.
  • High school education or equivalent with supplemental training in quality management techniques.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong computer background and leadership capabilities.

  • Experience in customer relations.
  • Self-starter and team participant.
