About the position

The Safety Manager at Weyerhaeuser's Evergreen Engineered Wood Products facility in Castleberry, AL, is a full-time, exempt role that plays a crucial part in the Mill Leadership Team. This position is responsible for providing safety-related guidance and ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations while fostering a culture of safety among the mill's 160 employees. The Safety Manager will lead initiatives to improve safety performance and accountability, conduct incident investigations, and mentor safety ambassadors to enhance the overall safety culture within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full-time health and safety support to the site and ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Build positive working relationships with site personnel and regulatory agencies.
  • Set safety objectives and targets to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and technical expertise in health and safety, supporting training and development requirements.
  • Conduct incident investigations to determine root causes and prevent recurrences.
  • Ensure timely completion of corrective actions from incidents and audits.
  • Oversee Workman's Compensation claims in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Mentor Safety Ambassadors and encourage employee involvement in safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate and lead internal and external audits for the Corporate Safety Audit program.
  • Implement facility safety plans, procedures, and reporting accurately and timely.
  • Continuously improve incident prevention programs and techniques.
  • Model safe work practices and facilitate team meetings and training.
  • Provide safety-related project management support using processes like MOC and OSHA standards.
  • Ensure understanding and adherence to job and safety rules.
  • Identify safety, environmental, quality, and production issues and follow up on incidents.
  • Meet production standards and goals.
  • Develop and train associates, including coaching and performance management.
  • Support training and development plans to improve skills and team performance.
  • Improve key performance indicators and operational functions for budget effectiveness.
  • Lead the team by resolving employee issues and ensuring adherence to policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of safety experience or High School Diploma/GED with 5 years of health and safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated passion for safety with proven experience in engaging hourly associates in safety.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, workman's compensation, and industrial hygiene regulations.
  • Experience leading and participating in safety incident investigations.
  • Knowledge of Chemical and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) management systems.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training.
  • Project management skills with strong leadership abilities.
  • Strong, engaging people-centered leadership style.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships at all levels.
  • Proactive and assertive nature with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with proficiency in MS Office and health and safety software programs.
  • High level of integrity, strong work ethic, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to maintain confidential information and work extended hours, including holidays, nights, and weekends.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Environmental Health or Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Safety and industrial hygiene certification and/or training.
  • 5 years' experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in wood products manufacturing.
  • Leadership/Management experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes.
