About the position

The Safety & Occupational Health Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and secure environment within the Federal Prison System. This position involves conducting safety inspections, promoting adherence to safety policies, and training staff and inmates in safety practices. The specialist is responsible for investigating incidents, preparing reports, and developing safety training programs, all while maintaining the security of the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety and environmental inspections of the institution and prepare reports for review.
  • Promote adherence to safety policies for the facility.
  • Assist in training staff and inmates in firefighting, occupational safety, and environmental protection techniques.
  • Assist the Safety Administrator in conducting investigations and obtaining statements from witnesses.
  • Prepare factual written reports identifying accidents, injuries, and property damage, along with recommendations for future prevention.
  • Develop and conduct safety training classes for inmates and staff.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education in safety or occupational health fields, or related fields with relevant coursework.
  • For GL-05: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • For GL-07: 1 full year of graduate education or specialized experience equivalent to GL-06.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar certification.
