About the position

The Safety Officer is responsible for conducting safety surveys, inspections, and audits to evaluate safety needs and make recommendations. This role involves inspecting work sites, developing and conducting safety training programs, investigating accidents, and overseeing safety-related medical surveillance programs. The Safety Officer will also analyze statistical data to identify trends and solutions to work-related problems, and will be required to drive to various City locations as part of their duties.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety surveys, inspections, and audits to evaluate safety needs.
  • Inspect work sites to evaluate safe work practices and working conditions.
  • Evaluate, develop, and conduct field and in-house safety training programs.
  • Investigate accidents/injuries to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Oversee the implementation and monitoring of industrial hygiene and safety-related medical surveillance programs.
  • Prepare, analyze, and evaluate statistical data to provide information for trends and solutions to work-related problems.
  • Serve on-call for after-hour incident investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in Safety Administration or a closely related field.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.
  • Experience in Occupational Safety and Health or related field.
  • Certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Transitional Safety Professional (TSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO), and Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Teams.
