About The Position

The Safety Officer at the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is responsible for organizing, administering, and monitoring the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan. This role ensures compliance with safety regulations and standards while addressing safety issues across various transit modes. The Safety Officer conducts inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations, promoting safety awareness among employees and leading safety committee meetings.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, transportation, or a related technical field.
• Two years of experience interpreting, developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations in a bus, rail, or industrial environment.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license in the State of Maryland.

Responsibilities

• Organize, administer, and monitor the MTA Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan.
• Ensure compliance with Federal, State, Local, and MTA Safety regulations/standards.
• Conduct inspections of vehicles, facilities, and sites to identify hazards and perform risk assessments.
• Participate in internal/external audits of contracted providers and provide Quality Assurance oversight.
• Write and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and make safety risk mitigation recommendations.
• Investigate incidents/accidents, interview witnesses, and complete comprehensive reports.
• Promote safety communication and capture safety issues from employees.
• Lead monthly modal Safety Committee meetings to discuss safety issues and action items.
