About the position

The Safety Program Officer at the State of Connecticut's Department of Children and Families is responsible for overseeing safety protocols at the Albert J. Solnit Children's Center. This role includes chairing the Hospital Environment of Care Committee, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, conducting fire drills, and providing safety training for new employees. The position is crucial for maintaining a safe environment for children and staff at the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Director of Safety for the Solnit South campus.
  • Chair the Hospital Environment of Care Committee and facilitate monthly meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with Centers for Medicare Services, Joint Commission, and State of CT Department of Public Health regulations.
  • Conduct, document, and critique campus fire drills.
  • Issue and maintain an inventory of access cards, keys, and campus radios.
  • Provide new employee training on safety-related topics.
  • Coordinate accident prevention activities and conduct routine inspections for compliance with safety codes.
  • Investigate accidents and maintain appropriate records.
  • Prepare fire evacuation plans and direct disaster plan activities.
  • Participate in the agency Safety Committee and schedule in-service safety training for staff.

Requirements

  • Six years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections, risk management, or loss control.
  • Knowledge of principles of occupational safety and health practices.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate accidents and recommend effective control measures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability in oral and written communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of CT fire codes and experience conducting fire drills.
  • Knowledge of The Joint Commission/Centers for Medicare Services Environment of Care and Life Safety standards.
  • Experience with radio communication devices.
