About the position

The Safety & Security Officer at The Hotchkiss School is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, faculty, and residential families. This part-time, per diem position involves patrolling the campus, responding to emergencies, and assisting law enforcement and emergency services as needed. The role emphasizes customer service and community engagement, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere while upholding safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high degree of visibility on School property to deter crime and enhance personal security.
• Assist law enforcement, EMS, and Fire Department personnel with their response to the School.
• Patrol School property, checking doors, gates, windows, and all points of entry to ensure unauthorized persons do not gain entry.
• Provide crossing guard services to ensure pedestrian safety.
• Check all campus fire protection equipment regularly and inspect buildings for compliance with fire regulations.
• Respond to emergency calls, including fire, medical calls, and burglar alarms.
• Maintain a complete log for each tour of duty, registering all activity and unusual conditions.
• Thoroughly investigate incidents involving the safety and welfare of the community and report findings to the Director of Safety and Security.
• Work assigned security details at School-sponsored functions and cover shifts as needed.
• Assist faculty and administration in enforcing School safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• Valid driver's license with a safe driving record required.
• Experience in law enforcement or safety/security field preferred.
• Possess a valid CT Security Guard license (preferred) or be able to obtain one within six months of employment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

• Past safety & security or law enforcement experience is preferred.
• Customer service experience of at least 1 year is preferred.
