About the position

The Cherokee site Safety Specialist provides direct site support to employees and supervision in all areas of safety. The Safety Specialist works collaboratively with the Safety & Security team and reports directly to the Safety Manager. This team works according to a comprehensive annual plan, achieving results through relationships, technical ability, training and assessing progress through metrics, while driving accountability and a sense of urgency throughout the organization. The Safety Specialist executes site and LSB programs directly and through hands-on interactions with all site personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a Safety-First Culture supporting stop work authority by anyone in the organization.
  • Achieve a detailed understanding of site and LSB procedures and policies and while assisting the Safety team in developing job-aides and performing in-person training and support to meet requirements.
  • Handle data gathering to support, capture and develop metrics to measure/ report progress, success, and improvement opportunities.
  • Execute against a developed annual H&S plan using a systematic approach with effective and transparent measures.
  • Support the site Safety Committee and build relationships with operations and maintenance personnel and supervision.
  • Maintain a cadence of employee interactions focused on Safety to increase knowledge, drive awareness and accountability while developing employees.
  • Maintain detailed connections to the operating units, maintenance activities, and project activities such that safety coverage is effective and visible.
  • Build knowledge and expertise in plant systems to drive progress, change, repairs, and solutions to day-to-day findings, action items and challenges while removing barriers to progress.
  • Own and execute the Safety Specialist's areas of responsibility including safety equipment inspection, fire water systems, rail safety, asbestos management, radio management, safe work permit audits, and self-assessment programs ensuring clear accountabilities and performance.
  • Coordinate and ensure PPE, forms, and other operations and maintenance safety equipment needs are met.
  • Manage air monitoring devices (bump test, calibration, equipment repairs and maintenance) and ensure that the operations team is never without adequate air monitoring equipment.
  • Partner with the site Training Manager on the site Safety program training curriculum and provide support.
  • Provide facility personnel with timely technical support, guidance, and resources to maintain compliance with applicable OSHA laws, regulations, company performance standards and site procedures.
  • Work to close action items from audits, investigations, self-assessment, and inspection findings.
  • Maintain and improve the site emergency response capability through training, equipment maintenance, drill planning and execution, and participation in the site HAZMAT team.
  • Maintain and improve required OSHA programs and execution at the operator and maintenance level, including but not limited to Safe Work Permits, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Industrial Hygiene, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, PPE, Machine Guarding, Material Handling, Powered Industrial Trucks, Line break program and ergonomics.
  • Maintain and improve site Contractor Management program through relationships, procedures, vetting, and oversight.
  • Utilize the services and processes established through the corporate ISNet World subscription.
  • Ensure contractors are treated with respect and communication on expectations is clear.
  • Provide immediate, when necessary, and timely feedback to contractors through post-job audits and ensure performance is reflected in the company's ISNet score.
  • Lead and follow-up on effective Root Cause Investigations of H&S and PSM incidents, ensuring appropriate, timely, and effective corrective actions.
  • Partner with other site safety professionals and the LSB corporate EHS leaders in the development, alignment, and execution of LSB EHS requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with Human Resources on Medical Records management and investigations as appropriate.
  • Oversee closure of action items from audits, investigations, self-assessment, and inspection findings.
  • Support site off-hours as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Health and Safety experience in chemical or petrochemical, manufacturing, or related field.
  • Emergency Response training, drill planning, and emergency procedures experience.
  • Good communication and public speaking skills.
  • Good computer skills, MS Office, use of Loss Prevention Software.
