About the position

The First Assistant Store Director at Safeway is a key leadership role responsible for assisting the Store Director in managing the overall operations of the store. This position involves providing excellent customer service, supervising store employees, and ensuring the store operates efficiently in the absence of the Store Director. The role includes various responsibilities such as staff management, cash control, inventory management, and maintaining high standards of customer satisfaction and store cleanliness.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Store Director in managing the total operations of the store.
  • Supervise and train store employees, including hiring, promoting, and disciplining.
  • Manage store performance, including cash control, inventory, and customer service during the Store Director's absence.
  • Track and analyze store performance, forecasting weekly/daily sales goals.
  • Communicate sales goals and performance opportunities with staff.
  • Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor in line with sales and productivity guidelines.
  • Support the Store Director in executing strategies for product placement and promotions.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and company policies.
  • Maintain store cleanliness, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Handle customer complaints and ensure superior customer service.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of assistant manager experience in a multi-department retail or service operation.
  • Two years' experience as a department manager in a multi-department retail or service operation is acceptable.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • Strong customer service and supervisory skills.
  • Solid understanding of overall store operations.
  • Proven leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a grocery store environment.
  • Knowledge of inventory management systems.
