About the position

The Sales Associate at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to guests, ensuring their satisfaction and loyalty. This role involves actively engaging with customers to promote merchandise, processing transactions, and maintaining a welcoming environment in the museum store. The Sales Associate plays a crucial role in contributing to the financial success of the store while upholding the museum's core values of agility, excellence, innovation, integrity, inclusion, and transparency.

Responsibilities

  • Greet guests as they enter the Museum Store and ensure all guests feel welcome.
  • Proactively engage guests in a sales relationship, seeking opportunities to upsell merchandise and services, answering guests questions regarding merchandise and Winterthur as a whole, and skillfully guiding the customer to a sales decision, thereby assisting in meeting store sales goals.
  • Process cash and charge transactions utilizing the POS system and cash register; bag or package purchases; provide change and receipts.
  • Accurately and responsibly handle all sales transactions, and reconcile all transactions and sales at the end of the shift.
  • Professionally and courteously resolve customer complaints, de-escalating the situation and seeking solutions that meet the guest's needs while abiding by Museum Store policies.
  • Cooperate with team members in a professional manner to ensure a positive work environment in which all employees support one another and the goals of the store.
  • Complete necessary administrative and supplemental assigned tasks (i.e. dusting, polishing silver, restocking sales floor, moving merchandise) as assigned.
  • Assist with arranging for mailing or delivery of purchases, marking price tags, taking inventory, and preparing displays.
  • Attend training sessions and other company meetings as requested by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-2 years in retail or customer service positions.
  • Preferred 3-5 years in the retail field or customer service positions in a museum setting.
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to remain calm and de-escalate disputes.
  • Good working knowledge of POS systems and the ability to accurately handle cash and sales transactions.
  • Exceptional sales skills and ability to work toward sales goals while maintaining a welcoming environment for guests.
  • Ability to work well with a team, as well as independently and with minimal direction during non-peak sales hours when staffing may be minimal.
  • Ability to multi-task and assist multiple customers at a time.
  • Awareness of security risks and thefts and how to handle or prevent such situations.
