About the position

The Sanctions Screening Analyst role at SMBC involves ensuring compliance with regulatory practices related to financial crimes, specifically focusing on sanctions compliance. Analysts are responsible for reviewing alerts generated by transaction and customer screening processes, ensuring adherence to Bank Secrecy Act, Anti Money Laundering, and Office of Foreign Assets Control regulations. The position requires critical assessment of alerts, manual screening, and collaboration with internal departments to maintain compliance and support investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Review alerts in transaction and customer screening for compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform manual screening processes and communicate with internal departments regarding pending items.
  • Contribute to workflow or process changes and redesign based on developing capabilities and experiences.
  • Provide first-level review and record decision-making on transactions and SWIFT messages referred for manual review.
  • Ensure business continuity and adherence to established guidelines and deadlines.
  • Prepare reports and materials in response to inquiries from auditors, bank departments, and regulators.
  • Participate in system testing and implement upgrades to ensure integrity of systems for transaction monitoring.
  • Maintain oversight on movement of funds in suspended funds cases.
  • Support timely record keeping for cases opened for investigation.

Requirements

  • 2 to 5 years of specialized experience in Financial Services Compliance, Payment System, or Money Transfer preferred.
  • Preferred BA / BS degree or equivalent experience.
  • CAMS and/or CGSS certifications preferred.
  • Business fluency in English.
  • Strong understanding of banking regulations related to money transfer, especially OFAC, AML, BSA, and USA PATRIOT Act.
  • Knowledge of market practices related to foreign and domestic money transfers.
  • Strong analytical, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous sanctions screening experience.
  • Knowledge of SWIFT and Payment Message Types.
  • Experience with FircoSoft software.
