About the position

The Sanitarian Trainee position within the Department of Environmental Protection is designed for individuals dedicated to safeguarding public health and the environment in Pennsylvania. This role involves a one-year formal and on-the-job training program focused on the regulation of public water systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and addressing public health concerns related to drinking water.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a Sanitarian.
  • Assess public water systems (PWS) to evaluate their sources, facilities, equipment, operations, maintenance, and distribution networks.
  • Conduct inspections to verify compliance with the PA Safe Drinking Water Act and related regulations.
  • Address complaints and provide information to waterworks operators, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Review plans and specifications for Non-Community Water Systems (NCWSs) in collaboration with program engineers and hydrogeologists.

Requirements

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active motor vehicle license.
