The Sanitation Worker I position is a full-time role responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the community. This job classification is designated as safety-sensitive, meaning that employees may face disciplinary action, including termination, if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license. The working hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime as required. The role involves a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall sanitation and cleanliness of public spaces, including residential areas and streets. The Sanitation Worker I will ride on the back of a sanitation truck, picking up trash along an assigned route. This includes manually lifting residential containers and emptying their contents into the truck. The worker will also assist the Sanitation Worker II by serving as a ground guide when backing and positioning equipment. Operating the compactor mechanism on the truck is a key responsibility, as is picking up yard waste such as limbs, leaves, and grass bags. The worker will need to ensure that the pick-up area is free of refuse and that lids are placed on empty containers. Additionally, the role requires cleaning refuse from streets where spills have occurred and washing public street trash containers. Interacting with citizens is also a part of the job, as the worker will address minor complaints or questions and refer more complex issues to the main office. Safety is paramount, and the worker must follow safety rules and practices, using safety equipment as required. Minor maintenance on refuse vehicles, such as lubricating parts and checking fluids, is also part of the job. The worker will be expected to clean illegal dump sites and perform janitorial and maintenance duties as needed. The role may also involve serving as a backup driver for the residential refuse truck and performing other related duties as required.
