About the position
The Santa Cruz Island Preserve Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Santa Cruz Island Preserve, ensuring the maintenance of its natural and built environments. This role involves managing a team, supporting visitor services, and implementing conservation programs while balancing on-island and off-island work schedules. The Preserve Manager plays a critical role in safety management, fire response, and biosecurity practices, while also fostering partnerships and compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the Santa Cruz Island Preserve.
- Manage the Island Coordinator team and support visitor services.
- Implement safety, fire management, and emergency preparation protocols.
- Manage biosecurity practices to protect island ecosystems.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and TNC standards for contracts and contractors.
- Maintain the Preserve's historic ranch compounds.
- Develop and manage relationships with key partners and volunteers.
Requirements
- BA/BS degree and 5 years of experience in facilities, land, or crew management, or equivalent experience.
- Experience leading and motivating staff and volunteers in outdoor settings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and web browsers.
- Ability to perform physical work under adverse conditions, including lifting 45 lbs and walking up to 5 miles on steep terrain.
- Prior CPR and First Aid training.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with group facilitation and people management.
- Willingness to obtain Wilderness First Responder certification and other related licenses.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
