About the position

The SBU Temporary Driver Mechanic is responsible for performing mechanical work on vehicles, which includes basic assembly, removal of parts, and minor repairs. As the mechanic gains experience, responsibilities will increase, potentially involving more advanced tasks such as fabricating experimental parts and working from blueprints. The role also requires driving test vehicles under various conditions and may involve weekend overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic assembly and removal of vehicle parts.
  • Conduct minor repairs including replacing fuel systems and unit connections.
  • Fabricate experimental parts and test fixtures as needed.
  • Drive test vehicles at various speeds and road conditions.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment for troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, reading, and writing.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Mechanical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems.
  • Welding experience.
  • Troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to use and understand computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Automotive background.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate degree.
  • Apprenticeship or internship in automotive mechanics.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
  • Specialty certifications.
