CAS is currently seeking a Content Acquisition Scientist on our Content Operations team. This position will be located in our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. The Content Acquisition Scientist cultivates relationships with publishers, patent offices, and suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement of source material to help build world-class databases of chemical, biological, and related scientific data. They monitor, review, analyze changes and impacts, and identify new sources of literature from around the world in various languages for inclusion in CAS Solutions. The role involves acquiring content for CAS databases, products, and services. The Content Acquisition Scientist applies knowledge to identify new sources of scientific material, including but not limited to patents, journals, and other serial publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, dissertations, and books. They assist acquisition accounts and ensure CAS has rights to use content in database building or in accordance with terms defined in license agreements. The position also requires participation in technical discussions with acquisition accounts and CAS Technology when adapting to format changes or acquiring electronic content from new accounts. The scientist will develop a basic knowledge of the department to suggest ideas to negotiate lower prices and provide analysis of document landscapes.

Responsibilities

  • Acquires content for CAS databases, products, and services.
  • Identifies new sources of scientific material, including patents, journals, and other publications.
  • Ensures timely and cost-effective procurement of source material.
  • Assists acquisition accounts and ensures CAS has rights to use content in database building.
  • Participates in technical discussions with acquisition accounts and CAS Technology.
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, partners, and suppliers.
  • Keeps correspondence organized and in a central location.
  • Suggests ideas to negotiate lower prices and provides analysis of document landscapes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, library science, information studies, or a related field.
  • 2 or more years of work experience, or relevant advanced degrees can substitute for years of experience.
  • Proficiency as a subject matter expert in the science publishing industry or patent offices.
  • Ability to utilize available resources to work independently and provide accurate information.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and decision-making.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Competence in managing competing priorities and supporting the customer experience.
  • Ability to recognize and report significant accuracy, workflow, process, and system issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in negotiating with publishers or patent offices.
