About the position

The Scholar Coach position is an AmeriCorps member role focused on addressing educational disparities by supporting K-3 students in reading. Scholar Coaches work directly in classrooms, partnering with teachers to enhance student engagement and literacy skills. This role involves one-on-one or small group tutoring, tracking student progress, and participating in professional development to ensure effective teaching practices. The position is designed for individuals passionate about making a difference in students' lives through education.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a supportive adult in a K-3 classroom to help students build reading skills and confidence.
  • Partner with classroom teachers to promote student engagement and literacy.
  • Conduct one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to provide additional reading practice.
  • Track student progress and meet regularly with the school's on-site coach.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
  • Participate in coaching, training, and professional development to improve tutoring skills.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share experiences with the community.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and online navigation.
  • Dependable with a history of good attendance.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Open to feedback and making improvements.
  • Capable of maintaining a schedule with students.
  • Must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • Able to successfully complete a background check.
