About the position

The Scholar Coach position is an AmeriCorps member role focused on addressing educational disparities by supporting K-3 students in reading. Scholar Coaches work closely with classroom teachers to enhance student engagement and provide individualized support to help students improve their reading skills. This role involves tracking student progress, conducting assessments, and participating in professional development to ensure effective tutoring. The position is dedicated to making a significant impact in the lives of students during the academic year.

Responsibilities

• Serve in a K-3 classroom and partner with the classroom teacher to promote student engagement.
• Meet with students one-on-one or in pairs to provide extra practice and build reading skills.
• Track student progress and regularly meet with the school's on-site coach.
• Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
• Commit to personal growth through coaching, training, and professional development.
• Represent Reading Corps at school events and share experiences with the community.

Requirements

• Dependable with a history of good attendance.
• Able to understand and follow instructions.
• Open to making improvements based on feedback.
• Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students.
• Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online).
• Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
• 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
• Able to successfully complete a background check.
