About the position

The Scholar Coach position is an AmeriCorps member role focused on addressing educational disparities by supporting K-3 students in reading. As a Scholar Coach, you will work closely with classroom teachers to enhance student engagement and literacy skills through one-on-one and small group interactions. This role emphasizes personal growth through training and coaching, with a commitment to making a significant impact during the academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a supportive adult in a K-3 classroom to help students build reading skills and confidence.
  • Partner with classroom teachers to promote student engagement and literacy.
  • Meet with students individually or in pairs to provide additional reading practice.
  • Track student progress and conduct skill assessments.
  • Enter student scores into data software for monitoring progress.
  • Participate in coaching, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share experiences with the community.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and online navigation.
  • Dependable with a history of good attendance.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Open to feedback and capable of making improvements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children or in educational settings.
  • Strong communication skills.
