About the position

As a Scholar Coach with Reading Corps, you will play a vital role in addressing the significant education disparities faced by students in our state. This position allows you to be embedded in a K-3 classroom, where you will work closely with the classroom teacher to foster scholastic engagement and enhance students' reading abilities. Your daily responsibilities will include providing one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to help students practice and develop their reading skills. You will receive comprehensive training and on-site coaching to ensure you are well-prepared to make a meaningful impact on the students' educational journeys. In this AmeriCorps member position, your commitment during school hours throughout the academic year is crucial. You will track student progress, conduct skill assessments, and enter data into software systems to monitor improvements. Additionally, you will represent Reading Corps at school events, sharing your experiences with the community to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and education. This role is perfect for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and are eager to contribute to their academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Scholar Coach in a K-3 classroom, partnering with the classroom teacher.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to enhance students' reading skills.
  • Track student progress and meet regularly with the school's on-site coach.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
  • Participate in coaching, training, and professional development to improve tutoring skills.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share experiences with the community.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Dependable with a history of good attendance.
  • Able to understand and follow instructions effectively.
  • Open to feedback and capable of making improvements based on it.
  • Competent with basic computer skills, including email and online navigation.
  • Must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • Able to successfully complete a background check.
