About the position

The School Athletic Director at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the development and implementation of a comprehensive high school athletics program. This position is critical in ensuring that all students have access to a world-class athletic experience that complements their academic journey. The Athletic Director will report to the Executive Director of CPS Sports Administration and work closely with the school administration to fulfill the district's mission of academic progress, financial stability, and integrity. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including administering extra-curricular athletic programs, supervising staff, maintaining compliance with policies and regulations, and ensuring the safety and well-being of student-athletes. The Athletic Director will be responsible for managing the athletic department's fiscal operations, engaging in both short and long-term fiscal planning, and coordinating department purchasing. This includes overseeing ticket sales, fundraising events, and the administration of student activity funds. The position also requires the development of a comprehensive safety plan for all home venues and the monitoring of academic performance for student-athletes. The Athletic Director will implement a grade check system and develop academic support mechanisms to assist at-risk student-athletes. In addition to these responsibilities, the Athletic Director will coordinate the scheduling of all athletic events, manage contracts for athletic contests, and ensure that all coaches and staff are compliant with CPS and state certification requirements. The role also involves public relations, where the Athletic Director will establish a positive image for the athletic department within the school and the community, interact with parents and volunteers, and oversee summer athletic programming. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills, the ability to motivate student-athletes and coaches, and a commitment to promoting equity and excellence in athletics.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the extra-curricular athletic programs.
  • Supervise licensed and non-licensed staff in Athletics including Assistant Athletic Directors, coaches, trainers, and support staff.
  • Maintain files and records required by policy, regulation, law and good practice.
  • Respond to requests for information from various stakeholders.
  • Implement board policies and advise the administration on regulatory matters related to athletics.
  • Assess department needs through consultation with students, staff, and parents.
  • Evaluate the extra-curricular athletic programs and engage in long-term planning.
  • Develop and update handbooks, brochures, and policy manuals.
  • Stay current on research, issues, and regulations related to athletic programs.
  • Develop a grade check system for student athletes.
  • Maintain and assure that all eligibility reports and lists of participation are submitted weekly.
  • Develop and update team schedules on all school platforms for public viewing.
  • Oversee transportation for all team travel.
  • Develop a school safety plan for every home venue.
  • Monitor and support the academic performance of student-athletes.
  • Oversee the Individual Study Plan (ISP) process for academically at-risk student-athletes.
  • Develop academic support mechanisms for student-athletes.
  • Engage in fiscal planning for the athletic department.
  • Assist in preparing and implementing the school system budget and coordinate department purchasing.
  • Supervise all ticket sales and fundraising events of the athletic programs.
  • Administer the receipt and disbursement of student activity funds.
  • Supervise and guide the planning and execution of all parent volunteer organizations.
  • Create schedules for all operations and activities within the departments.
  • Issue timely announcements of upcoming events and deadlines.
  • Hire, schedule, and provide payment to lifeguards for all aquatic sports.
  • Arrange transportation for athletic contest participants.
  • Provide for emergency health care and first aid treatment.
  • Manage and develop facilities for athletic programs.
  • Coordinate public or special events such as Homecoming and Award Ceremonies.
  • Establish a positive image for departments within the school and the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; Master's degree and/or general administrative endorsement preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in sports program administration and/or interscholastic sports.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • NIAAA Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) preferred.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage all aspects of the athletic program, including financials.
  • Ability to motivate student athletes and coaches.
  • Ability to make rational decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Proficiency using technology and applications, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and web content editing software.
