Responsibilities

  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive school bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Check school bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures, completing required reports.
  • Keep records on school bus mileage, gas and diesel consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Maintain monthly attendance for TEA report and current route description; submit change requests for approval prior to implementation.
  • Prepare and maintain seating assignment chart and sweep bus, emptying trash can daily.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the school bus and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents daily regarding student behavior while on the school bus.
  • Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline, reporting discipline problems to school officials.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect school bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, steering, etc. to ensure safe operation before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as two-way radio, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflector triangles.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route and any accidents involving the school bus to the Director of Transportation immediately.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office according to established guidelines.
  • Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification, including safety and in-service meetings.
  • Maintain a presentable appearance according to departmental guidelines, including neat grooming and good hygiene.

Requirements

  • Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with appropriate endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • School bus driver certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug tests.
  • Ability to pass the state required physical examination for school bus driver.
  • Ability to complete required school bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to enforce student discipline procedures.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
