About the position

The primary purpose of this position is to operate a school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and to and from designated locations. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and possess or be able to obtain a Class "B" CDL with "P" and "S" endorsements. An acceptable driving record is essential, and the candidate must be able to pass a school bus driver medical examination, drug screen, criminal history background check, and fingerprinting. The role requires the driver to adhere to established schedules while driving the bus daily along assigned routes. The driver will also be responsible for transporting students to and from extracurricular activities. Anticipating potential problems such as traffic, weather, and road conditions is crucial, as is making necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and minimize delays. The driver must perform pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is safe for operation and report any needed repairs to the supervisor. Keeping the assigned bus clean and maintaining an appropriate fuel level is also part of the job. In the event of accidents, vehicle damage, or student injuries, the driver must report these incidents and complete the required reports. In terms of student management, the driver will instruct students on safe boarding and exiting procedures, supervise them while they are on the bus, and ensure they cross the street safely. The driver must maintain discipline and manage student behavior effectively, reporting any issues to the appropriate administrator and communicating with teachers and parents as necessary. Safety is paramount, and the driver must observe all traffic laws and safety regulations, correct unsafe conditions, and maintain safety certification. Following district safety protocols and emergency procedures is also required. The driver will operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers, and must complete and maintain accurate records and reports related to bus mileage and the number of passengers transported.

Responsibilities

  • Drive bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants.
  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students.
  • Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
  • Maintain safety certification.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

  • Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage and number of passengers transported.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to use maps to follow routes and locate addresses.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate bus.
