About the position

The School Custodian III position involves directing the work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school. The custodian is responsible for assigning, laying out, inspecting, and supervising the work of subordinates to ensure that buildings and grounds are kept in a clean and orderly condition. The role includes personally performing more difficult maintenance work related to plumbing and electrical fixtures, as well as woodwork that does not require journey worker level trade skills. The custodian supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions and is in charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums, and loudspeaker systems. Additionally, the custodian supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants, and lawns, requisitions and manages janitorial supplies and equipment, maintains records, and has security responsibilities for the school.

Responsibilities

  • Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school.
  • Assigns, lays out, inspects and supervises the work of subordinates.
  • Performs difficult maintenance work to plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions.
  • Manages cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment.
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants, and lawns.
  • Requisitions, receives, stores, and manages janitorial supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records of supplies dispensed and equipment issued.
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and unusual happenings or accidents.
  • Keeps daily time sheets.
  • Has security responsibility for the school.
  • Turns 'night lights' on and off at proper hours.
  • May supervise student help when assigned.
  • May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers.
  • May perform typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary.

Requirements

  • Two years of progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work, grounds maintenance work, or general laboring experience.
  • At least one year of work experience must be comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.
  • Demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude through successful completion of assignments involving supervisory responsibilities.
