Under the direction of the Maintenance Services Supervisor, the Grounds Maintenance Irrigation Specialist performs specialized work in the design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of District irrigation systems. This role involves ensuring the completion of projects in a timely manner and according to specifications, troubleshooting, and performing preventive maintenance. The specialist prepares designs and blueprints for irrigation systems and operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. The position requires a strong understanding of current applicable water conservation techniques, practices, and software systems and technology. The specialist will review plans and change orders to ensure design compatibility with existing District Grounds Program standards and systems. Responsibilities include estimating time and material costs for specific jobs, installing and maintaining irrigation and water lines, valves, clocks, automatic sprinkler controls, and other related components. Preventive maintenance is a key aspect of the role, which includes testing and reviewing system functioning to ensure proper and water-efficient operations. The specialist will also be responsible for locating and repairing underground low voltage electric cables, wires, conduits, pipes, and valves as needed. In addition to irrigation-specific tasks, the Grounds Maintenance Irrigation Specialist will perform general grounds maintenance work, which includes mowing, aerating, weeding, planting, and applying pesticides and herbicides. The role requires maintaining adequate inventory of equipment and supplies utilized in sprinkler and irrigation repair, as well as preparing written materials to document activities and convey information. The position demands a high level of skill in the design, installation, and maintenance of irrigation systems, along with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with others.
