School Safety Officer (Part-Time): Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice

About the position

The School Safety Officer is responsible for implementing the consistent daily application of procedures and best practices to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all staff and students at Yvonne B. Miller High School and Post-Secondary Programs. This position reports directly to the Director of School Security and Staff Safety. The selected candidate must be able to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice-mandated training and certifications, including the three-week DJJ Basic Skills for Security located in Hanover, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Implement daily safety and security procedures at Yvonne B. Miller High School.
• Ensure the welfare of all staff and students.
• Report directly to the Director of School Security and Staff Safety.
• Complete required training and certifications.

Requirements

• Must have valid driver's license by time of employment.
• Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of safety and security.
• Knowledge of adolescent development, including brain development, mental health, and impulse regulation.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students.
• Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
• Ability to monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate behavior.
• Knowledge of conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
• Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and provide appropriate responses.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

• Obtain and maintain CPR certification.
• Experience supervising and interacting with at-risk or adjudicated juveniles.
• Security related experience.
