About the position

Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) is seeking an Instructional Coach to join our transformative college access and teacher training program. This role is pivotal in mentoring and supporting our young teaching staff, who are primarily college-aged teaching fellows. The Instructional Coach will be responsible for creating engaging, hands-on workshops that inspire excitement and confidence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) among students. The position involves regular observation and coaching of teaching fellows, providing constructive feedback to enhance their teaching effectiveness and relationship-building skills with students. In addition to workshop creation, the Instructional Coach will support teaching fellows in internalizing and adapting lesson plans, as well as delivering workshops and electives. The role requires active participation in program management, modeling effective teacher leadership during community times, and providing classroom coverage as needed. The Instructional Coach will also assist with individual student academic and behavioral challenges, ensuring a supportive learning environment for all students. The School Year Program includes Super Saturday Events, where students connect with the Breakthrough community, receive mentorship, and engage in rigorous content. The Instructional Coach will play a crucial role in facilitating these events, focusing on social-emotional learning (SEL) activities and hands-on STEAM experiences for middle and early high school students. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about educational equity and have a strong commitment to fostering a positive learning environment for diverse student populations.

Responsibilities

  • Create a one-hour, hands-on, student-centered workshop designed to build student excitement and confidence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and/or Math
  • Support college-aged teaching fellows in internalizing, adapting, and delivering workshops, electives, and advisory
  • Observe 8 - 10 teaching fellows and junior teaching fellows and provide growth-oriented feedback
  • Provide advice and instruction for teachers on hands-on techniques and resources
  • Support program management and model effective teacher leadership during key community times such as hallway transitions, snack time, lunch, electives, and community meetings
  • Support teaching fellows and students in community spaces
  • Co-lead instruction and provide classroom coverage as needed
  • Support as needed with individual student academic and behavioral challenges

Requirements

  • At least two years of teaching experience (three or more years preferred)
  • Teaching degree or certification strongly preferred
  • Commitment to and passion for educational equity
  • Understanding of the social, emotional and cognitive developmental level of middle and early high school students
  • Ability to work with students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Ability to deliver positive, constructive and honest feedback
  • Outstanding presentation, writing and organizational skills
