About the position

The Science Editor at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is responsible for ensuring that all assigned documents are copyedited to the highest standard. This role focuses on maintaining the technical substance of documents while enhancing clarity and overall style. The position involves collaboration with subject matter experts and authors to produce clear, well-written documents that are accessible to a diverse audience, including GEF member countries and non-specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Editing and proofreading technical documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and clarity, ensuring adherence to STAP guidelines and UN standards.
  • Verifying the accuracy of technical information and data, collaborating with authors to resolve discrepancies and address revisions as needed.
  • Ensuring consistency in terminology, formatting, and style of STAP publications.
  • Reviewing and revising documents to improve readability for the targeted audience.
  • Improving the formatting and style of documents, including formatting references according to the agreed referencing system.
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts, authors, and the STAP Secretariat on assigned tasks.
  • Conducting quality assurance checks to ensure that all edited documents meet the highest standards of quality.
  • Ensuring that all tasks are completed within agreed timelines.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental and scientific disciplines, sustainable development, science-policy, communications, English, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of proven experience as a Science Editor/Editor, preferably within the environmental science-policy and sustainability communities.
  • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills with a keen eye for details, specifically for technical documents.
  • Proficiency in using editing tools and software, including Microsoft Office tools (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with environmental field terminologies and technical concepts.
  • Good understanding of scientific style guides.
  • Familiarity with UN editorial standards.
