About the position

The Science Librarian at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte plays a crucial role in enhancing information literacy and supporting scholarly research within the College of Science, College of Computing & Informatics, and College of Health & Human Services. This position involves engaging with academic programs, teaching research instruction, managing collections, and providing advanced research support to students, faculty, and community patrons. The librarian will also participate in professional service and scholarly contributions, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes lifelong learning and discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage with relevant academic programs in the College of Science, College of Computing & Informatics, College of Health & Human Services, and other assigned departments.
  • Teach research instruction sessions for assigned subjects and academic programs.
  • Develop appropriate instructional and informational aids for students, faculty, and community patrons.
  • Manage and develop collections for assigned subjects, expending budget allocations for acquisition of library materials according to established deadlines.
  • Provide research and reference support for assigned subjects to students, faculty, and community patrons.
  • Provide advanced research support for students and faculty, including documenting the impact of University research and assisting in systematic reviews.
  • Conduct collection evaluations for all proposed new courses and curriculum changes in assigned departments.
  • Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus.
  • Communicate effectively and positively with individuals of varied backgrounds.
  • Participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and instruction for first-year undergraduate students.

Requirements

  • Completion of a master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program by time of application.
  • A second master's degree in another discipline or an earned doctorate is highly desirable.
  • Degree or significant coursework in one or more disciplines of the sciences, or professional experience working with science students and faculty in a research library setting.
  • Instruction or liaison experience in an academic research library.
  • Knowledge of the research needs of students and faculty at a Doctoral Intensive Institution.
  • Knowledge of the structure, use, and preservation of information resources in assigned areas.
  • Experience in systematic review searching, research impact support, or scholarly publication services.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of groups and to create an environment of mutual respect.
  • Knowledge of relevant professional and technological issues in assigned areas.
  • Ability to work effectively in an organization in which change is both necessary and constant.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional public service.
  • Intellectual curiosity and adaptability.
