About the position

The Custodian position at Thompson Elementary is a critical role responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of the school facility. This position requires a commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the public. The custodian will work for 6 hours per day across 180 days per year, ensuring that the school is prepared for daily activities and special events. The role involves a variety of cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and maintaining bathrooms and common areas. Additionally, the custodian will be responsible for setting up and taking down equipment for events, performing minor repairs, and conducting security checks of the facility. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to handle various cleaning and maintenance tasks, often under time constraints and with frequent interruptions. Custodians are expected to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff to ensure safety and security. They will also participate in major summer cleaning efforts to prepare the school for the upcoming academic year. The role may involve operating various cleaning equipment and tools, as well as performing grounds maintenance tasks such as snow removal and litter collection. The custodian will report to the Assistant Director or Manager of Facilities and will receive guidance from the head custodian and school administrator. This position is essential for creating a conducive learning environment and requires a proactive approach to facility maintenance and cleanliness.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned parts of the school facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions.
  • Opens and/or locks building doors and operates alarm system for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, and public use of school facilities.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public for safety, security, and public relations.
  • Performs major summer cleaning of the facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting, and repairs.
  • Spot cleans and makes minor repairs, such as painting, plastering, and fixing leaks.
  • Performs security checks of the facility, perimeter, doors, and windows.
  • Pressure washes locker rooms, showers, and kitchen mats as needed.
  • Washes windows and operates various cleaning equipment.

Requirements

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, with experience with cleaning equipment and techniques preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish cleaning compounds and materials.
  • Ability to learn the operation of a variety of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of routine repairs and maintenance, including some painting, carpentry, plumbing, and other general maintenance.
  • Ability to move and position furniture and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cleaning equipment and techniques preferred.
