About the position

The Science Teacher - Biology position at Leonia High School is a tenure track role aimed at developing students' skills and competence in various fields of science, particularly biology. The teacher will work under the supervision of the School Principal to enhance students' understanding of scientific methods and problem-solving, as well as the application of science in practical situations. The position is available ASAP and will remain open until December 31, 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in biology, in accordance with district curriculum.
  • Promotes critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas.
  • Creates a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area.
  • Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday existence.
  • Instructs students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress.
  • Maintains familiarity with district and New Jersey State standardized tests.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education.
  • Ensures student conduct conforms to school standards and policies.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies.

Requirements

  • New Jersey certification as a High School Biology Teacher.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignments.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of science subject areas, including biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in related areas preferred.
  • Successful prior biology teaching experience.
