About the position

The Scientific Editor at Cell is responsible for evaluating and making decisions on research papers submitted to the journal, engaging with the scientific community, and advocating for science through thought leadership. This role involves collaboration with authors, reviewers, and the editorial team to publish impactful scientific work across various topics in life and biomedical sciences. The position is open to candidates at both entry and senior levels, emphasizing a passion for science and scientific communication.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluating and making decisions on research papers submitted to Cell.
  • Working with authors and reviewers to publish exciting science across a range of topic areas.
  • Engaging with the scientific community in their labs and at conferences.
  • Learning about scientific developments, recruiting papers, and establishing relationships.
  • Working with the Cell team on editorial processes, decision making and collaborative projects.
  • Advocating for science, providing thought leadership, and influencing the practice and direction of science and scientific communication.
  • Building deep relationships with Cell Press journals on content and collaborative projects.
  • Contributing to broader Cell Press and Elsevier initiatives.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.D. with research experience in an area relevant to the journal.
  • Background in tumor immunology, cancer biology, clinical and translational research is preferred.
  • Prior editorial experience is valued but not necessary.
  • Demonstrated love of science and desire to learn.
  • Ability to appreciate the issues and questions that drive different fields of science.
  • Talent for clear communication to help authors make their messaging clear, concise, and compelling.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team of editors.
  • Interest in scientific communication and understanding of publishing trends.
  • Creativity and willingness to experiment and improve.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and focus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in scientific publishing or editorial roles.
