About the position

The Scientific Program Manager for the Microbial Sciences Initiative (MSI) at Harvard University is responsible for developing and planning scientific events, serving as a liaison between faculty and committees, and managing various outreach and educational initiatives. This role requires a collaborative and self-directed individual to support the initiative's goals in microbial studies, ensuring effective communication and program development within the academic setting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and plan scientific events such as seminars, symposia, and workshops.
  • Serve as the liaison between faculty Directors and various departmental and interdepartmental committees.
  • Identify, recommend, and make changes to programs through ongoing assessment and evaluation.
  • Invite microbial scientists for lecture series and negotiate contracts with vendors for events.
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to budget for all spending.
  • Lead initiatives including outreach, education, and scientific planning.
  • Review grant and summer fellowship applications and make funding recommendations.
  • Create scientific content for the website and promotional materials.
  • Organize MSI's digital presence, including website and social media.
  • Coordinate trainee-focused programs and oversee application logistics.
  • Manage temporary and student workers supporting MSI.
  • Represent MSI on scientific and educational issues at the University and external organizations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in biological sciences.
  • 3+ years experience in program development in an academic setting or equivalent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences preferred.
  • Outstanding communication skills and capability to work independently.
  • Engagement with scientific literature and enjoyment of scientific writing.
  • Highly motivated, solution-driven, and effective in team settings.
  • Flexible, energetic, diplomatic, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion.
  • Experience at Harvard is a plus.
