About the position

The Scientific Program Manager at UC San Francisco will oversee the PReDiCTR-TB Consortium research program, managing its programmatic and operational activities. This role involves coordinating with various stakeholders, including Principal Investigators (PIs) and research teams, to ensure effective communication and project completion. The manager will also be responsible for organizing meetings, tracking project deadlines and budgets, and preparing research manuscripts and grant proposals. This position requires a strong background in project management within biomedical research, particularly in NIH-funded projects, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic scientific environment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently oversee the PReDiCTR-TB Consortium research program's programmatic and operational activities.
  • Coordinate with the Administrative Group lead to manage all administrative operations, finance, and facilities for the program.
  • Design and develop major program components and administer the full range of the program's operational requirements.
  • Work with PIs and research team leads to formulate short-term planning and procedures.
  • Develop and organize programmatic meetings, conferences, and other consortium meetings.
  • Manage and coordinate multi-PI biomedical research grants, facilitating communication among multiple stakeholders.
  • Identify and define inter-dependencies among scientific projects and cores.
  • Participate in general management processes and policies to support operations and strategic objectives.
  • Foster collaborations within the existing consortium and with research lab teams.
  • Coordinate data management, resource allocation, and training.
  • Engage in long-term strategic planning for grant renewal and address potential scientific challenges.
  • Simultaneously manage and track multiple deadlines and coordinate among scientific labs and industry partners.
  • Ensure project team and center-wide meetings have a clear agenda and are documented.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities and revenue streams.
  • Participate in advanced program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure.
  • Assess program's effectiveness and recommend changes to content, policies, and procedures.
  • Use project management tools to schedule, prioritize, and communicate within teams and to external stakeholders.
  • Track resource needs, commitments, and budgets across the portfolio.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on behalf of the Administrative Group Lead and PI for various meetings and reports.
  • Serve on committees representing the program and participate in planning.
  • Help build the project management function by creating tools, processes, and templates.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of Project Management experience in NIH funded and/or biomedical research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability writing peer-review manuscripts.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative research projects.
  • Familiarity with the NIH grant proposal and progress report process.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and quickly prioritize work assignments.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to think creatively and independently.
  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.).

Nice-to-haves

  • Terminal degree in decision and management sciences (MBA, MS, etc.) or equivalent experience/training.
  • Project Management Certification.
  • Experience as a project/program lead.
  • Experience leading a multi-PI collaborative research project.
  • Authorship in peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with biomedical research in infectious diseases.
  • Experience with data science and pharmacometrics.
