About the position

The Scientific Programmer role at Michael Baker International focuses on advancing engineering toolsets and data science initiatives within the Data Automation and Analytics group. This position is integral to supporting the Lakewood water group and collaborating with engineers across various civil engineering disciplines. The role emphasizes innovation, creativity, and programming proficiency to develop automation and analytics solutions, particularly in machine learning and statistical analysis, while ensuring best practices in software engineering are applied throughout project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Advance engineering toolsets and data science initiatives.
  • Collaborate with water resource engineers across offices.
  • Maintain and improve existing tools and client-facing applications.
  • Operationalize proof-of-concept solutions with market potential.
  • Identify high-value opportunities and develop novel automation and analytics solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, GIS, or Data Analytics (MS preferred).
  • 1 year of exposure to software best practices for legibility, adaptability, scalability, maintainability, and deployability.
  • 1 year of experience using common data engineering tools such as Docker, PostgreSQL, Airflow, and cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc).
  • 2 years of experience in applied science using programming, ML/Deep Learning, and statistical analysis.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, R, and/or SQL.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with principles of hydrology and hydraulics, and software like HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS.
  • Understanding of 2D and unsteady H&H modeling.
  • Strong understanding of statistics and uncertainty, with experience in statistical modeling.
  • Familiarity with open-source geospatial tools such as GDAL, PDAL, and Geopandas.
  • Interest in developing Spatial Temporal Asset Catalogs (STACs) and graph databases.
