About the position

SABIC's Global Application Technology team is seeking a dedicated Scientist/Engineer to join their ranks in Pittsfield, MA. This role is pivotal in driving innovation and supporting the development of advanced materials and technologies. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on plastic processing. As a Scientist/Engineer, you will engage in cutting-edge projects that focus on sustainable polymers, self-driving vehicles, energy storage solutions, and 5G communications. Your expertise will be crucial in developing part designs and enhancing processing techniques to assist SABIC's customers in effectively utilizing their materials in various applications. In this position, you will be responsible for leading research and cross-functional development projects from inception to completion. This includes collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to establish project deliverables and testing protocols for development programs. You will be tasked with translating complex technical data into actionable insights that support decision-making processes. Additionally, you will document experimental results for internal technical reports, external publications, and patent applications when applicable. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for this role, as you will be expected to leverage scientific fundamentals, including research, experimentation, analysis, and interpretation of results, to deliver tangible business impacts. Conducting processing studies with commercial and developmental resins will be a key responsibility, along with optimizing processing conditions through data acquisition software and end-product performance testing. Responsibilities

  • Work in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Create and lead research and cross-functional development projects from start to finish.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to define project deliverables and test protocols for development programs.
  • Translate complex technical data into effective knowledge supporting decision making.
  • Document experimental results for internal technical reports, external publications, and patent applications when appropriate.
  • Take a multidisciplinary approach to developing new and existing technologies to deliver tangible business impact.
  • Apply scientific fundamentals including research, experimentation, analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Conduct processing studies with commercial and developmental resins.
  • Optimize processing conditions using data acquisition software and end-product performance testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Materials Science.
  • 10 or more years of relevant technical experience in plastic processing areas such as R&D, Manufacturing, or Part Design.
  • Strong presentation and written communication skills.
  • Strong hands-on ability and solid understanding of mechanical design principles and part performance.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capability with experimental design and statistical analysis experience.
  • Experience with JMP, Minitab, or equivalent software preferred.
  • Must work well in a team atmosphere.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
