About the position

The Manufacturing Scientist I position at AbbVie focuses on supporting and executing drug substance purification operations for natural and recombinant proteins, particularly neurotoxins, in a BSL3 pilot plant environment. The role involves hands-on work with purification processes, including chromatography and ultrafiltration, while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and maintaining detailed records of operations. The successful candidate will collaborate with team members to innovate and improve processes in a fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities

• Support and execute BioSafety Level 3 (BSL3) R&D pilot plant activities related to purification process operations.
• Prepare buffers, pack columns, and set up chromatography systems for operations.
• Ensure batch record preparation and execution with minimal errors.
• Start and complete manufacturing activities on time according to the established schedule.
• Operate small lab equipment such as UV spectrophotometer and SDS-PAGE/Western blot as assigned.
• Provide troubleshooting assistance and identify solutions during executions.
• Maintain select agent and toxin sample inventory.
• Assist in scheduling work tasks and ensure project commitments are met.
• Report significant issues to management with appropriate urgency.
• Adhere to safety procedures regarding neurotoxin handling.

Requirements

• BS in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemical/Chemical Engineering, or closely related field with 5+ years of experience, or MS in the same fields with 2+ years of experience in manufacturing operation or R&D in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.
• Hands-on experience in purification operations, including chromatography and ultrafiltration/diafiltration.
• Ability to work in a team-centric environment and collaborate effectively with others.
• Commitment to safety and adherence to SOPs.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with protein precipitation/extraction is desired but not required.
